Having undertaken an Open University social work degree I worked in child protection social work for the NSPCC for eighteen years, managing a family support centre. In 2006 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had six months away from work while I underwent treatment. During this six months, as well as doing a lot of gardening, I also spent many hours researching possible causes and links. When I returned to work I had decided that one thing I could do quite easily was to ensure that I removed all toxins, carcinogens and hazardous ingredients from my skin care products. This wasn't quite as easy as I thought as ingredient lists on products are in INCI terminology (International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients), the writing is always tiny and some labels have to actually be peeled back to be able to see the ingredients. I took voluntary redundancy from my job in 2008 and started making my own skin care products. These went down so well with family and friends that I decided to set up my own business. This wasn't exactly straightforward due to the many and varied EU regulations on cosmetic safety. I took several courses on making products, found a chemist specialising in safety assessments, organised insurance, started experimenting and have never looked back. After two years I realised I needed a dedicated space for manufacturing so had a workshop added to the house. I still make all of the products by hand in small batches. I have help and support from Keith with IT, labelling and setting up events. I am also fortunate enough to have good friends and a granddaughter (nickname as a baby Doozle or Doozle-icious) who seem to enjoy helping out at events sometimes which means I can actually go to the loo and get a cup of tea! Do come and chat to me if you see me at an event. Jill I am always being asked this question so…..here goes. I was born in Essex but spent most of my childhood in Devon. As an adult I have moved around the country (London, Reading, Devon and Cornwall) ending up in Wiltshire since 1984. I am married to Keith, have two sons and five grandchildren. Most of my working life was spent in 'caring' roles; working with young children, older people and young people going through tough times.
